Oral Health Education in New Zealand
 
New Zealand has two universities that offer degree programmes in oral health.
 
The Auckland University of Technology offers a Bachelor of Health Science (Oral Health). This is a three-year degree programme that enables successful graduates to register as dental therapists or dental hygienists.
 
The University of Otago offers several under graduate degrees as well as post graduate training.
  • The Bachelor of Oral Health (BoH) is a three-year degree programme that enables successful graduates to register as dental therapists or dental hygienists.
     
  • The Bachelor of Dental Technology (BDentTech) is a three-year degree programme that enables successful graduates to register as dental technicians.
     
  • The Postgraduate Diploma in Dental Technology PGDipDentTech) is a one-year postgraduate programme that enables successful graduates to register as clinical dental technicians.
     
  • The Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) is a five-year degree programme that enables successful graduates to register as dentists.
     
  • The Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent) is a postgraduate programme that enables dentists to specialise in specific areas of dentistry such as orthodontics, endodontics etc.

Accreditation of training programmes

Under the HPCAA, the Dental Council is responsible for the accreditation and monitoring of training programmes that lead to prescribed qualifications within the oral health professions.
