Discipline

In conjunction with the Health and Disability Commissioner (HDC) and the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal (HPDT), the Dental Council seeks to ensure that the public and oral health practitioners have access to a fair and responsive complaint and discipline system and are well informed of procedures.

In accordance with the HPCAA, all complaints alleging that the practice or conduct of an oral health practitioner has affected a health consumer must first be considered by the HDC. The HDC may refer complaints back to the Council or may prosecute the complaint before the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal. Council assesses a referred complaint and considers what action should be taken. This may include referral to a Professional Conduct Committee (PCC) or to the Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.
